Master Shi Yanran is a 34th generation Buddhist monk and Kung Fu master of China Songshan Shaolin Temple (est. 495 AD, the birthplace of Chinese Chan Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu).
Master Yanran founded Shaolin Temple USA in 2007 and established Shaolin Temple Culture Centers on both American coasts to share Shaolin Temple’s 1,500-year old Kung Fu Chan culture with the American people through classes, performances and workshops. In 2011, he launched a popular Shaolin Kung Fu program at Stanford University.
Prior to his mission in the United States, he served as coach of Shaolin Temple Warrior Monks Corps and Sangha Training Program. He travelled with Ven. Shi Yongxin, Abbot of Shaolin Temple to over 30 countries as ambassador of Chinese culture, and toured the world with the acclaimed theatrical production of Shaolin: Wheel of Life.
In March 2004, he accompanied Abbot Yongxin to the United Statesfor the proclamation of the first “Shaolin Temple Day” in California. In 2009 and 2014 respectively, he produced the weeklong celebrations of the 5th and 10th anniversaries of Shaolin Temple Day in California that included cultural exhibits, Kung Fu performances, Chan cultivation workshops and religious dialogue.
Master Yanran was named “Martial Artist of the Year” in 2010 by the World Congress on Qigong and Chinese Traditional Medicine, and was featured on the cover of Kung Fu Magazine in 2012. He was honored as “Community Hero” by the California State Assembly in 2015 for his leadership and contributions in bringing health, cultural enrichment and harmony to Californian communities.
Master Yanran specializes in traditional Shaolin fist, the Shaolin health qigong classics Yijinjing (Change of Sinews) and Xisuijing (Bone Marrow Cleansing), and consummate Shaolin hard qigong skills such as “Iron Jacket,” “Iron Head,” and “Four Spear Tips Holding Up Body.” His instructional DVDs and online videos are immensely popular worldwide.
